Five Apps Battle Through Six Rounds, With No Participation Trophies
Short-drama apps ceased to be a niche curiosity some time ago. For Q1 2025, Sensor Tower counted about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue for the category, with the US producing 49% of it. The quarterly figure had risen to about $750M by Q1 2026, whereas full-year 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B. If you have ever searched a store for a short reels app, you have run into at least one of the five names that dominate the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. Vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall make them seem identical Meg Bush reelshort on the surface. The differences lie underneath, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and they affect what you pay and where you can watch. Six rounds, one winner in each: that is the format, and we relied on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
Our Side-by-Side Comparison Grid
Before the rounds get underway, here is the entire field on one screen. All prices reflect the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. Install counts come from each app's Google Play listing. Media Partners Asia estimates the market shares, which cover the microdrama market outside China. A cell that says "not reported" means no reliable source released the figure; we would rather leave a gap than guess. See the rounds below as the commentary and the grid as the scoreboard.

Round 1: Who Owns Them and How Big They Are
ReelShort is the incumbent, and it still carries the most weight. Backed by China's COL Group and based in Sunnyvale, Crazy Maple Studio launched it in August 2022, and MPA puts its share at about 29% of the market outside China. Its 2025 revenue stands at $785M in MPA's estimate, and MPA forecasts $1.05B for 2026. Singapore's StoryMatrix operates DramaBox as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology; the app launched in April 2023 and holds about 21%. ReelShort led $130M to $120M in Q1 2025, according to Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, and DramaBox ranked first. The youngest app here is DramaWave, often mistyped as "dreamwave", yet it already has about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly passed $700M by Q2 2026. With 5M+ Android installs, My Drama is the minnow, yet it is the only one counting Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. ShortMax appears to be the same app as Jiuzhou Culture's ShortTV, and it operates from Hong Kong. Sitting just outside this lineup, GoodShort has, for context, about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.
Round 2: What It Costs
Here, the apps seem most alike. ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all offer a weekly pass at roughly $19.99 in the US App Store, and each one auto-renews. ShortMax also lists a $9.99 "Weekly Pass Pro", and DramaWave's weekly VIP begins at $7.99. Auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99, mark the different route DramaBox takes. The standout is DramaWave's monthly VIP at $36.99, the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass total about $80, which makes a monthly plan at less than half that the smarter buy for steady viewers. Winner: DramaWave, thanks to a monthly plan that undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin. Prices vary by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may be different.
Round 3: Watching for Free
Free viewing is the area where the marketing turns loud and the details get thin. One rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes, and the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, per ReelShort's own blog. Paid coins do not expire, but free reward coins usually do, and a seven-day check-in streak earns 100+ of them. The easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying is through ReelShort's official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Free options exist on DramaBox too, but its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Stay away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and "unlimited coins" generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Round winner: ReelShort, by a clear margin.
Round 4: Platforms
These apps really part ways over screens. ReelShort streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress that syncs across devices, while also covering iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android. Because its domain points to the ShortTV website, ShortMax also offers web browsing. DramaWave's verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox's website mostly directs you back to the app. ReelShort's App Store listing does not show an Apple TV app, but My Drama offers one for tvOS 18 or later, and that is its trump card. Need nothing more than a shorts app on your phone? Any of the five will do. The winner: ReelShort overall; My Drama claims the living room.
Round 5: Libraries and Original Series
On raw numbers, ShortMax is untouchable. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages, and as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave, which claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, reportedly relies on AI for more than 80% of its newly released content. On recognizable hits, ReelShort comes out ahead, thanks to The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. An LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis are DramaBox's response. Fox's commitment to 200+ vertical titles over two years gives My Drama the most intriguing pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, purely on volume.
Round 6: Perks and Fine Print
DramaWave runs away with this one. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video all appear in its App Store listing, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. ReelShort's cross-device sync is the next most useful perk for viewers who move between phone and laptop. Since it varies more than the prices do, the fine print merits a look too. My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity, and ShortMax's terms state refunds are not given "unless the paid product/service is unusable". Cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Winner: DramaWave, comfortably.
Best For: The Final Picks
No single short drama app takes every round, which means the right choice depends on how you watch. Thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices, ReelShort is best for web viewing. Best for Apple TV is My Drama, the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. ShortMax's claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid, making it best for sheer volume. Best for commuters and steady bingers is DramaWave, which pairs offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. For backing the current revenue leader, DramaBox is best: Sensor Tower ranked it first in Q1 2026, and it was picked for Disney's 2025 Accelerator class. Thanks to its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels, ReelShort is again best for free, legitimate sampling. When all five tempt you, settle on one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
